Drawing Mary Anning

First Attempt

Using this painting as my reference picture I decided to illustrate a more realistic character so that I could develop the drawing from there. Because I want to aim my work to young girls as my target audience I know that they would prefer a character to look more like a character and not a caricature. So after this first attempt of drawing Mary Anning I decided to make my drawings more inspired by a "Disney princess". My other drawings will need to included big eyes and a 'pretty' dress. However to make it more inspirational for younger girls I don't want my drawing to look too girly. My aim is to inspire girls to look into science and break outside of their boundaries just like Mary Anning did throughout her life.
This drawing was an attempt at making Mary Anning look younger, although it did make Anning look younger I don't think that this would be an attracting illustration for girls to look up to and want to read the story or watch the animation over and over again.
I don't like how normal she looks and it looks quite sad. So sticking to making my drawings more appealing for younger girls I will make the eyes bigger and almost create a new character for myself to draw. Instead of trying to make the drawings look like Mary Anning.

Experimenting again with the face shape and details I started to make my drawings less realistic to Mary Anning and instead making it a new character for me to draw, still using similar pieces of clothing and accessories to link people back to and identify as Mary Anning. The eyes have finally been made bigger and the face looks more interesting than the previous ones I've drawn before.
Adding colour to the face really brought to life the character I wanted I overall I am happy with the outcome I have made.
