Sketchbook experiments
Sketchbook Page of new prints for my folded format and Vignettes. I have added 3 new fossil designs to my folded format; sea Urchins, Belemnites, Trilobites. On this page I experimented with painting the fossils and printing them. For my final folded format I will be using the printed fossils on top of the lift the flaps and underneath I will be painting the fossils.
On this page I wanted to show the difference between a detailed painting of a fossil and a print. Although I do like the painted ones, I think the printed fossils look more realistic to something you would dig up and find. And at the bottom of the page I decided to paint a background behind where I would printed the fossils. This definitely looks the best and the white outline around it helps the fossils stand out and I think I will do this with my folded format, if one of the prints don't turn out as clear, as a backup plan.
I experimented more with the lift the flap experiments. I wanted to have the fossil on top and underneath show what it could have looked like in the Jurassic period and added colour to it. The hardest part about this was cutting the circles exactly and I might have to make the flaps rectangle on the finished piece so theres not a change of the final piece going wrong.
This is how the painted underside looks and I think this looks incredibly effective when you open the flaps and 'transform' the fossils. Using the word transform was inspired by Just So stories project. I think using this experiment in my final piece is going to make my folded format more effective and fun for children to read.
